What we are building towards
IIIT Hyderabad was founded in 1998 as a not-for-profit, public-private partnership—the first of its kind among India’s IIITs. Twenty-five years on, that founding idea has grown into a research-led university with a clear, singular direction: to be counted among the world’s foremost centres of technology research, and to put that research to work for the country and for society.
A research-led institute, by design and by outcome
IIIT Hyderabad has never been organised around conventional departments. From day one, it was structured around research centres and labs—a deliberate choice that has made research, not just teaching, the organising principle of the institute. That choice is the throughline of our story.
Founded in 1998 with 496 students and 16 faculty members, IIIT-H set out to prove that a research-first, industry-connected model of higher education could work in India—and could work at the highest global standard.
Twenty-seven years later, that experiment has scaled into one of India’s leading research universities:
What that scale has produced is research with national reach. IIIT-H’s centres—the Kohli Centre on Intelligent Systems, the Robotics Research Centre, the Centre for Security, Theory and Algorithmic Research (CSTAR), the Cyber Manthan Centre, and the Applied AI Research Centre (INAI), among others—have contributed directly to India’s standing in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cybersecurity.

This story now needs room to keep growing. We have outgrown the physical capacity that carried us through our first 27 years, and the next chapter of research needs infrastructure, funding, and partners who will back it.

The Institute Corpus Fund is a flexible pool of resources that the institute can allocate to areas of greatest need. Contributions to this fund empower IIIT Hyderabad to respond quickly to urgent requirements, bridge shortfalls, and prioritize projects of strategic importance. Whether it is strengthening infrastructure, supporting research, or enhancing student initiatives, this fund ensures that donor support directly fuels the institute’s most impactful priorities.
